The Birth of Christ – Words from the Prophet

At Christmastime, we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. In the Old Testament, we read words from the prophets about His birth. Today, a living prophet, Russell M. Nelson, also talks about the birth of the Savior and its importance. These are some of his words.

“When so many around us are burdened with fear and uncertainty, I invite you to make room in your heart for those around you who may be struggling to see the light of the Savior and to feel His love. No gifts will mean as much as acts of pure love you offer to the lonely, the worn down and the weary. These are gifts that remind us and them of the true reason for the season: the gift of God’s Son, Jesus Christ, who was born to cast out all fear and bring everlasting light and joy to all who follow Him.”

“At this Christmas season our thoughts turn to this babe born in Bethlehem. I urge you to seek this Jesus. He truly is the Prince of Peace. I invite you to draw closer to Him and experience the joy that envelops all who are willing to follow the Lord Jesus Christ. As one of His Apostles, I bless you with the ability to receive and feel the infinite love that our Savior and our Heavenly Father have for you.”

On December 2nd, 2018, President Nelson shared four gifts from the Savior:

  1. Jesus Christ gives the unlimited capacity to love. “That includes the capacity to love the unlovable and those who not only do not love you but presently persecute and despitefully use you”
  2. The Savior offers the ability to forgive. “Through His infinite Atonement, you can forgive those who have hurt you and who may never accept responsibility for their cruelty to you”
  3. The Savior gives the gift of repentance. “Can we begin to see the breadth and depth of what the Lord is giving to us when He offers the gift to repent? He invites us to change our minds, our knowledge, our spirit, even our breathing.”
  4. The promise of life everlasting. “When the Father offers us everlasting life, He is saying in essence, ‘If you choose to follow My Son—if your desire is really to become more like Him—then in time you may live as We live, and preside over worlds and kingdoms as We do.”

As we commemorate the birth of Him who is the light of the world, new light is kindled in each of us. Today, we need His light — the light of Jesus Christ — more than ever. We need men and women who reflect His light by being peacemakers willing to reason with others rather than to contend with them. … As we follow Jesus Christ, we can make this a better world.

Conclusion

During Christmas, it’s wonderful to have the words, not only of the prophets of old but of a living prophet. God cares for each one of us and does not leave us alone to figure out how to understand the Savior. A living prophet, who is Russell M. Nelson has been called to give us God’s word and to help us come closer to Christ. The words of a living prophet inspire us to be better and to understand the Savior better. It has been that way since Adam and will continue until Christ comes again.
