We live in a time of turbulence. A time where information is right at our fingertips. A time when people feel they have to be first to report, state, or declare so that their “feeds” get as many hits as possible. Going viral is important to so many. However, in this chaos, we have increased our chances of being deceived, misled, and misinformed. Where can we go to find stability?
Elder (now President) D. Todd Christofferson states, “It is only by looking to God that individuals, families, and even nations can flourish” (Look to God and Live, October 2025). President Russell M. Nelson declared, “In coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting, and constant influence of the Holy Ghost” (Revelation for the Church, Revelation for Our Lives, April 2018).
To find stability, we must look to God and seek the companionship of the Holy Ghost. Truth and happiness are found when we do so.
In the roller coaster of my life, I have had moments where I have looked to God and relied on the Holy Ghost. This was most needed when overcoming my addiction. I wanted to get past the desires my addiction created. I wanted to be free of the shackles I had placed on myself. When I realized that I could not do this alone, I turned to God for help. I also sought therapy and changes from professionals. Looking to God gave me confidence. This led me to trust in the process therapy recommended.
I believe that looking to God in these moments and going through therapy saved me from disaster and ruin. I believed in myself. I saw progress. I had reassurance from the Holy Ghost and others that I could overcome and be better.
Obeying the commandments is another way we look to God and live. “No promise is repeated more often in Book of Mormon scripture than this: ‘Inasmuch as ye shall keep my commandments ye shall prosper in the land; but inasmuch as ye will not keep my commandments ye shall be cut off from my presence.’” We prosper (receive blessings) when we obey. We are separated from Him when we do not.
In reality, we all fall short of always looking to God. We are imperfect beings and make mistakes. This is okay! It’s why we are here. We can reconcile the ideal (always looking to God) with reality (sometimes we don’t). When we realize we aren’t looking to Him, we can repent and change where we look for truth.
Elder Christofferson tells us that, “Looking to God means that He is not just one of our priorities; it means, rather, that He is our one highest priority.” Making God our “one highest priority” is the ideal we strive for. We can look to Him in everything. It takes effort. Had I not put in the effort to overcome my addiction, I couldn’t have done it. If I don’t put in the effort to look to God, I won’t receive His blessings. That will lead to less stability and more chaos, and who really needs more chaos in today’s life?
